Before arriving back in London in 1966, the TARDIS passes through an inexplicable field of energy that seems to have an effect on the ship. The Doctor cannot understand what has happened, or what the mist in space was, but he and Dodo have the chance to reunite with old friends Ian and now Barbara Chesterton. A sweet welcoming is intruded on by the bizarre encounter with an alien the Doctor and his former companions have already met...

Having agreed to take the alien back to its home planet, Barbara and Ian are delighted to be back on another adventure, in spite of knowing that they may never get lucky and return home again. However, the TARDIS begins to act unusually. The controls seem unresponsive, and a spooky eeriness fills the ship. A shadowy figure passes among the TARDIS, as a creeping force begins to take over...
