In the freezing and shivering night, a shadow wandered between the woods before entering Oxyn, a vast community of powerful witches built from its heroic ancestors who managed to control the fire element.

Although magnificently fragile, Novah was the name of the baby girl who had been unmistakably fortuned with a pair of strange features: a cryptic mark tattooed on the skin of the child's spine and the prophecy which foreshadows the birth of a dangerous power.

If the sayings are correct and history repeats itself, Novah had been kissed by Mystral, the ghost of the dark witch who haunts souls and destroys lives, leaving the mortals with poor control over their own fate and on the verge of going mad, for the power that bares within is tremendous and unstable.

Until mortals can control their own element, they can't complete the ritual hosted by the Annual Tournament to become one with magic or dispose of their human limitations.

After being alive for a whole century, Leon Aegon, head of the defenses squad, is the only immortal who fought and survived against the darkness impaled by the ghost, though being able to manipulate all five elements certainly held a price.

When he finally finds about the secret the girl holds, soon he realizes her mark is not like his, but much more obscure. Still, as uncertainty spikes, and the tournament begins, Leon may be the one source of hope young Novah can hold on to.

Gwyneth had always felt connected to her faith, a higher power presiding over her. That faith had shaken that devastating day those years ago, the day that went on to haunt her every nightmare for years to come. She's still trying to come back from it, to not only restore her faith in life and love, but her faith in herself. The sanctity of her spirit- she prayed for resolve. Every punch was a prayer. Every mile was a hymn. Until her knuckles bled and her knees gave. Azriel had been surrounded by darkness his whole life, a poison on his world, on his being. He exercised restraint in his every waking moment, banishing that darkness within himself. Some guessed of the strain it put on him, but no one knew the extent of it, how deep his scars ran. It was better this way, he was sure. He had always thought that if there were a higher power- which he wholly doubted- such deities must loathe him to have burdened him such darkness. He hadn't much faith in the gods anyway, much less faith that he could sway their opinion on him. But Gwyneth and Azriel did have one thing in common: the quiet fight within themselves. They only knew one way: to go about it alone, couldn't fathom letting another in. But there's a magic in finding someone who is your equal but opposite, something transforming. And frankly, Gwyneth and Azriel could both use a little magic. All characters owned by SJM in the ACOTAR series. Story takes place after the events of ACOSF. Aligns with the events in my other fic: A Storm of Flames and Deceit. I haven't finished Crescent City, so this story takes place outside of the events of those books as well. Along with the help of the sister he shares with Zoran Masters, Shade is trying to create the antivenom with Elora to reverse the Curse infecting his kingdom. When Shade threatens to steal Emperor Nepheus' power, Armaeda is forced to obey his command and destroy the bond between Princess Aeryn and her Champion, Zoran. Shade's new wife regards him with hostile repulsion for severing her connection with Zoran. Aeryn keeps him at a dagger's distance even while their thrones sit next to each other. Shade's burning desire to get close to the one woman he can touch without killing her is increasing the more she fights their growing attraction. Aeryn's mother, the once Empress Caerwyn, has risen from the ashes along with the full-blooded Phoenixians who were killed in the explosion on Azmar. They are back for revenge against the Draconians and will not stop until the emperor succumbs to their reign of wrath - not even when Aeryn is the first to fall. SEQUEL TO "WHEN IT REIGNS"
