River Collins knew nothing of the outside world for the first twenty and some years. Having been born into the captivity of Global-1, a pseudo-science secret agency, she was taught only what they wanted her to know. Finally, River had the chance to escape. When she did, the woman ran into the newly outed Tony Stark, otherwise known as Iron Man. He takes her in after her pleas for safety. However, when he realizes she is an enhanced human, he keeps her safe within the Stark Tower in fear of her being exploited. When the Avengers initiative is formed, and Tony is recruited, River tags along for the ride.
