Post apocalypse... Nelly is lucky because about one year before the world crumbled into chaos she moved to a small farm far away from any cities or any other people really.  

Having a degree in botanic and having worked in a gardening shop saved her from starving and a big chunk of luck saved her from being discovered.

Of course she heard the news when everything went down and the last time she was in the nearest town still gave her nightmares, but all in all she was rather well off.
