A merman living in a half-sunken Venice must decide between revealing himself to the oppressive humans to pursue the man he wants or repressing his desires to save everyone that matters to him, except himself, in The Sunken City. There isn't even a word for what Caydo is. At seventeen, he only knows that he is different. If Caydo manages to restore the magic that allowed his kind to breathe underwater, they could live free of the humans, but he would be trapped with the merpeople, who will never accept his sexuality. Attracted to a devious human from the surface, Caydo must navigate a new world of card games and vices, which could bring more trouble, instead of the romance and the refuge he craves.
At fifteen, Caydo's younger sister, Sarzana, must choose either to stay a mermaid or to become a human, as it is illegal to bend after she turns sixteen. Unbeknownst to her family and friends, she has already chosen a human life designing buildings, which goes against the merpeople's goddess. The surface might not be welcoming to a mermaid, but the humans have the answer to what happened to her father in the attacks ten years ago.
Told from multiple perspectives, the world of the merpeople and the ruins of Venice come to life in this engaging story of fearlessness and hope in the face of adversity.
