Sleep is a state of rest of a man, someone who posses visions during unconscious sleep, the vision will lead him to identify the victim. 

The gift is a way to stop the mark away from their death, if he can't save the victims, his soul will be owned by a powerful evil spirit. In the other hand, the gift will fade if he can save every victim.

Events in the visions are not directly shown and with the victims cooperation is need to end the curse.
This isn't just an ordinary gift that he received but a life is at sake.
