The story takes place in a time where every October is what they call "Witch Season." A time where all the and paranormal creatures, (ex. shape shifters- haha- they are going to be there too hun ✨), though they can be seen all year- October is when they are mostly seen. You (the reader) don't believe in all that stuff- thinking it's just something parents tell their kids, "Oh- it's October- behave or I'll give you to the Witches."
