Mallory is a sixteen-year-old assassin working under the Commission. Born with an insatiable appetite for destruction, she wears the smell of blood and death like perfume. Unfortunately for her, Mallory is assigned an important mission to locate Five Hargreeves and investigate his plan to prevent the apocalypse. Her usual mature demeanor fizzles when she officially meets her irritating target. Mallory forgets how to act, butchering her lies and endangering the mission.
It's because they can't stand each other. Right? It's because something as simple as being in the other's presence makes them want to rip their own hair out. Right?
Yet, Mallory and Five can't help but be drawn to one another, no matter how hard they try to resist.

Five stares down at me with a cocky smirk dancing on his lips. What's there to be cocky about? I glance down and recognize something shiny in his hands. My jaw drops. Five is holding my knife-- the equivalent one that should have been securely strapped to my thigh just moments ago.
"If you wish to kill me, Mallory," he whispers casually, his lips grazing against my ear. "You must try a tad bit harder. I'm not going to make it easy for you, of course."
