Nicola Hartley had a rough home life growing up. She was often yelled at or ignored by her parents, and she didn't have many friends. But she found a group of like-minded kids who accepted her for who she was. The group was led by Alene Byrne, who was a charismatic and intelligent leader. Raden Howell was a pessimistic and reliable friend. Adriana Reyes was a talented and creative poet who brought tears to the eyes of those who heard her poems. Holden Jones was a virtuous rational thinker. Marcia Ali was a troublemaker but very loyal to the group she says are the only ones worthy of her company. They would share their stories and feelings with each other and look after one another. Nicola found a sense of belonging and community with this group of kids, and she felt more at home with them than she did with her own family. But unfortunately, Nicola would soon find out that even good things are not forever.
