Kara and Hardy Reynolds and their best friend Sam spend their school nights as secret monster hunters. On the New Year's Eve of Kara's senior year, she is killed during a battle between Hardy and a monster. Fearful for his own life, Sam flees, and Hardy, alone and racked with guilt, descends into despair. Using her unbounded devotion as a guide, Kara returns as a ghost, and with a new set of skills, she and Hardy continue hunting monsters.
When Sam's departure turns into a kidnapping, Kara calls on indebted witch Beth Winter to help infiltrate a cavernous lair hidden below a small town mansion where they suspect Sam is captive. Once inside, they encounter three imprisoned monsters: undead nerd Chris, party-girl vampire Monique, and pious werewolf Will. After uncovering a mystery more sinister than they ever could have imagined, their rescue operation becomes a fight for survival, challenging Kara's devotion to everything she holds dear.
