So bad that he even resorted to thievery... An act which he loathes... But he's desperate. It didn't turn out well, as the job put him on his demise, leaving the only family he had... 

Is what he thought... But he was wrong, on one part... It wasn't the end of his life, or his demise. Now what would he do on this new world he's definitely unfamiliar of... Would he fall to despair caused by regret? Or would he enjoy his new life, offered to him?  Who knows...
