"The one thing Sky has never told me, though it's the one thing I've always wanted to know, is my mother's name."
Sky and Lillian, ages 17 and 13, are all the other's got. They are held by the bond of Lillian's mother, Sky's older sister, the first to die. They've finally gotten off the streets, into a combat school with one goal: to destroy Lillian's father. Through the rejection of students who see them as being just as terrible as Eli, the Shadow, Sky starts to crumble, while Lillian tries to stand tall. But fighting an evil sorcerer isn't a job for kids, and Lillian can't connect to her mother without her name. Why won't Sky tell her her name?
Through heartbreak, death, pain, story, and song, Sky tries to come to terms with the fact that he can't live off of just one person. And Lillian starts not only losing her mother, but losing Sky. And she needs Sky.
After all, a flower can't be sheltered by a broken sky.

Tal is no ordinary fourteen-year-old girl. Perhaps it was that she had grown up without a Mother, or perhaps it was that she did have a useless Father, and two increasingly distant Brother's. Maybe it was that her favourite hobbies included thieving with street orphans that didn't know her name, and leaping from rooftop to rooftop at night, just to feel free from every other part of her life. Maybe she was the freak her neighbours thought her to be.
But then, after another long evening of disappointed silence from her Father, and staring down a future she did not want that was closing her fast, Tal escapes out into the cold rain. Little does she know that something big is waiting for her nearby. Something that does not belong on her ordinary street. Something that will forever change her not so ordinary life...
