The 31st Room
Needing a fresh start, a young woman rents one of 30 rooms from a large boarding house in a small town. Almost immediately once she moves in, she starts hearing a knocking at the end of the hallway on the top floor of rooms, where there isn't a room. When she questions the other tenants, they tell her they haven't heard anything.

All I can hear is the loud ring of silence. It's broken only once a day, when a small portion meal comes through a slot that is immediately sealed after. It's dark. Nothing but black. I lost count of the days at 127. I don't know where I am, I've only heard one thing. I overheard them say, "The North field was over ran, it's complete chaos over there. I decided to walk over to my best friend's house, and once I got closer her driveway, I could see the door was left ajar. Rita probably left it open for me, I thought, while shaking my head disapprovingly. I woke up in a metal cell, wearing some kind of black jumpsuit and bulletproof vest. It was strange that I knew the room was metal, or it was a cell, when I couldn't remember my own name. Or where I came from or what I was doing here. The room was tiny. My feet touched the door when I lied down. I stood up and pushed the door. Solid. Locked. It wasn't meant to be opened. I stepped back and analysed the situation. One - if it was not meant to be opened, it had to be opened. Two - I didn't know what was outside. Three - I didn't want to be locked up.
