The amount of detail the mark has shows how good their mental health is. Say someone has a extremely breathtaking mark, absolutely stunning. Their soulmate is in mental agony. The more beautiful the mark, the more hurt their soulmate is. Not only will they have a mark connecting them to their soulmate, they can also feel each other's pain. Once both people turn 17, which can take years saying their could be a large age gap, they both can feel the physical pain something could inflict on them. Say one of them breaks their arm, the other wouldn't have a broken arm as well, they would simply be feeling the exact same amount of pain the other is feeling. It's a extremely scary part of having a soulmate since they would be able to feel if their soulmate is being beat but wouldn't be able to do anything about it. They're subject to change, they can disappear, change color, or even scar. A black mark means feelings on all sides are mutual, red means the love is unrequited, and well, a scar comes from a mark dying. Law is not one easily persued, he's never gotten a mark, and finds them to be, putting it frankly, a load of crap. How could some inexplainable mark on the skin determine love anyway?
