Nick is monopolized by the thought of being unable to get hold of a good life because of an error he made before―that of which running AWOL from the career framework he had planned out for himself before, and never coming back to it even once. He is gripped with underlying craze that the good life is objectively tantamount to a successful day job. And the urge to this obsession has become much intense when he ran into Charlie from Class of 2007 in the same place where he had run AWOL from.
