Marie woont samen maar haar ouders en haar grote broer Lou. Helaas zijn haar beide ouders niet gelukkig. Haar vader drinkt veel, en haar moeder is bijna altijd aan het werk. Marie wilt het liefst dat alles anders word. De band met Lou is ontzettend sterk, en hij is dan ook haar beste vriend. Het is midden in de winter als Marie gaat schaatsen. Helaas blijkt het ijs niet zo dik te zijn als verwacht. Onder water treft Marie dingen aan die haar, al aardig intense leven, op z'n kop zet.

17. That's how old I am today. It's about time too. I was getting sick of being 16. I hear a low rumble being emitted from my chest. I run towards the woods before the change takes over my body.
