Will I have to save myself?

This is the back story of one of my characters, Azalea Thorn. Azalea's family was normal, and happy. Sadly, however, her family gets murdered by a family friend who leaves Azalea alive. He makes it seem like they were killed by someone else and then promised Azalea he would take care of her. While he seemed like he had good intentions for Azalea, she ended up with years of mental, physical, and sexual abuse.
