Draco Malfoy was never perfect. There was constantly something missing in him. Some little thing, nobody could find. Did Draco knew about his missing piece? I can't tell. But I think he realized that at the end. At the very end. Only when he lost her, and not for the first time. When because of his actions she left. Left him, and the only thing left after her was the sense of loss. I think that she was the one to whisper things into his ear that Draco himself didn't know about. Things he had no idea about until loneliness surredned him. And her whisper was loud. It echoed loudly in Draco because his inside was already completely empty.
