The Selection of the Next Royal Princess. That was what they called it. Outside the Palace, we call it the Selection. It’s too much to say the whole title. Of course, for the sake of formality, we have to say the whole title every so often, when palace officials come to town, or if we were to say, be in the presence of the royal family. Not that that ever happens, of course, very few people ever personally meet the royals. I myself have only ever seen pictures of them. My mom met the king and queen when she was pregnant with me, and the queen was also pregnant with the boy that would be her only child. They talked about their pregnancies, and my mother always said that that meant I was lucky, that I might be Selected, maybe marry the prince myself. I thought she was crazy. I wasn’t good enough to be Selected by the Prince. Besides, I wasn’t interested in becoming a princess.
