He fought it bravely as it attempted to devour his friends. Then the moment before it was all over for his friends, a Soul Reaper named Inari Himura appeared and was able to distract the hollow for a time. She too was pushed to the point of losing, then in a moment of desperation Kenji agreed to the transfer of Soul Reaper powers and saved his friends. Then as their time together went along, Inari was located and forced to return to the Soul Society for her transgressions.
