The main character in this book Sawyer is 18-years-old, therefore a couple of years older than the other characters (besides Rafe), so there is no problem of age in this story between the main character and Rafe. This is also mentioned in the first chapter of the story.

Note: I do not in any way support or sympathize any of Rafe's actions throughout the series.
