Ash is your everyday cat. Well, she lives with wild, aggressive, evil cats, so she's not necessarily normal. After the battle between BloodClan and the Forest Clans, she begs to join ThunderClan, being rejected by Firestar. She gets hurt from the confrontation, Firestar permanently damaging her paw.
She runs, frightened.
The Dark Forest doesn't want to lose the chance of gaining a warrior, so an in-training-warrior, Clawfire, comes to Ash in a dream. He says he can grant her great power if she promises to help them revenge the Clans.
Ash accepts, and earns the power of ice.
