Various CAWs of virtual wrestling in new roles are summoned in various ways to compete in an upcoming Mortal Kombat tournament to defend Earthrealm against the forces of Outworld.
Outworld, now ruled by the collection of souls created by sorcerer Shang Tsung, Ermac, leads the charge in the invasion of Earthrealm. The current protector of Earthrealm, Status Quo, must choose his successor as he ascends to Elder God status and prepares a select group of mortals to fight on behalf of the realm.

Prologue: Millions of years ago, Shinnok, one of the Elder Gods, turned on his fellow deities and invaded the Earthrealm. Raiden, the protector of Earthrealm, along with the Elder Gods stopped Shinnok. Locked him up in his own amulet. Others followed in Shinnok's footsteps, like Outworld's emperor Shao Kahn, who was obsessed with conquering realms. So the Elder Gods began the Mortal Kombat tournaments as a way to even the odds... give Earthrealm a chance. For generations, Shao Kahn followed the Elder Gods' rules. The war moved to the arena, where he sent his toughest fighters to challenge Raiden's greatest defenders in Mortal Kombat. The rules were clear, if Shao Kahn won ten tournaments in a row, he won. But if Earthrealm broke the streak, Kahn would have to start all over again. Outworld won nine tournaments.
