The journey starts with the introduction of father Todd Amati who welcomes a flesh eating demonic clan into the village only for destruction to take place with the slaying of all of the villagers, guilt ridden and in suffering Vortices of Spleen Dreams he engages on a journey to see the one eyed witch conical, along the way he meets and comes into the path of Canting Wilmore a tree goblin who travels with him and helps him try and attain fervently a golden purple headed flower with awesome powers. The book quickly draws in the reader through Marks accomplished writing and engaging storytelling, and we are introduced to lots of characters in the early stages of the book. Mark skilfully builds the tension at the beginning and scopes out his characters in such a way, that we are able to empathize with all parties, We see all sides and are left with the feeling that they all have a moral point to their actions. This is its strongest point as all characters motivations are fully explored and revealed. There are also a few surprising twists thrown in and we see Mark using his skill as an genius writer to flesh out the background to the demon world and neighboring worlds to give them depth and purpose. It is a world of intrigue, ambition and magic as well as one of honor, strength and myth. Not all parties are what they seem and nothing is quite what you would expect as it breaks from the usual fantasy conventions.
