Percy was shoved into the foster system when he was 12, right after the death of his mother and "disappearance" of his step-father. But the parents of Dipper and Mable Pines decided they wanted to try fostering a kid in need out of the goodness of their hearts. They end up getting attached and adopting him, only for him to disappear four years later. He is presumed dead, until a certain pair of uncles come across him on the high seas.
