You used to be divided based on your social class. But now, you're divided based on when you're born.
The country first known as America was now split into generation sectors, and you stayed in your sector your whole life. Using technology, every generation has stayed, all the way up to the Lost Generation. Once children are born, they're shipped off to their sector, never to see their parents again. The government sends guardians to help with the children's upbringing, educating them and preparing them for life. No one crossed into other sectors without risking death. And it was all ruled by royals who had one person from each generation, to try and show that they're trying to keep things in order.
But no one could expect Everleigh Barlow.
Everleigh, being a Gen Beta, goes in for the annual Generation Game, a series of tests to see if you're in the right sector, given to everyone who's eighteen. However, Everleigh gets shocking results: she was born the second Gen Alpha transferred to Gen Beta. The test administrators don't know what to do; she's the first person born between generations. They take her to the royals, and they let her in on a deal: she will pose as their daughter Genevieve, who had died two months ago, and in return, they wouldn't show anyone the news. Everleigh, afraid, has no choice but to agree.
Being drawn into royal life, Everleigh learns that Princess Genevieve was supposed to take the throne on her 19th birthday, giving her just a year to prepare. However, the coronations occur with a generation test. What if they discover she's not only not the princess, but doesn't belong in a generation?
