Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chavithi, is an auspicious Hindu festival which is celebrated for 10 days every year. It marks the birthday of the beloved elephant-headed Lord Ganesha. Ganesha is known as the God of wealth, sciences, knowledge, wisdom and prosperity, and that's why most Hindus remember him and seek his blessings before starting any important work. It begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar.

By having a rat as his vehicle, Ganesha is symbolically shown to have conquered this pest which is an obstacle to prosperity and success. Hence, in Hinduism, he is also known as Vighnaharta - conqueror of obstacles.
