after losing his parents Tom would barely speak, going into a orphanage and kids teased him. when his parents adopted him they accepted the way he was but do wish for him to speak as they never actually heard his voice, Tom goes to school somewhere in London. students don't really bully him but he does get teased and he has no friends.
Tord joins the school and becomes friends with Tom, Tom just spoke to him through writing.

He doesn't talk much to anyone except a boy named Tom, who also lives at the orphanage since his parents were both killed. Tord talks so little, that even when they grow up to be in high school, he still can't talk well and has an accent, even though he has lived in Britain for 12 years.
