Percy Jackson has moved from foster family to foster family his whole life. He doesn't know who his parents are or why he seems to have unique gifts, like being able to breathe underwater or the fact that he seems to be a natural in the both Egyptian and Greek. At age thirteen, his foster dad is killed in a freak accident and the only evidence found is words written in Greek and Egyptian.
