For the SciFriday Competition. "Space is a waste of energy, time and resources. Contrary to what science fiction novels wish us to believe, there is no Deus Ex Machina contraption to take us to far away worlds. We are stuck here, and everywhere else is far. In a different universe where the Americans landed on the moon first. the Soviets continue to work towards the red planet before the Americans get there too, in the vast attempt to reach the red planet before eachother which leads to a boom in space interest with the general public.
