Kathryn lives at her dad's ranch when her parents split up. Kathryn is upset and hurt, her grades start slipping and to her nothing is like it used to be. Kathryn's best friends Rachel and Christy don't even understand her anymore. Everything seems to have fallen apart. Her dad is getting re married and Kathryn is being forced to be the bridesmaid. Kathryn feels like she has been defeated, but suddenly luck comes her way.
Kathryn finds a wild mustang, he is all black except the white markings on his face. He is not a ordinary horse, but very special. Kathryn finds out that that horse is her flame, she knows that even though he is wild, he needs her like she needs him. Kathryn has to convince her dad that behind all that wildness there is a heart, before the mustang is killed and all Kathryn's dignity is shattered....

At first he doesn't want to be there, but eventually finds a reason to stay. Rose has had a good life up until the day of the accident, but now she's got to face loss, and heartbreak, but she's got to learn to get back in the race.
