Sirens are born out of dead sea creatures, once a sea creature dies of something other than old age, it will be reborn into a new life as a siren.  Tom was born out of a shark's carcass, and due to this and the often false thoughts about the shark species, Tom was banished from the other sirens and had his vocal cords slit by the other sirens so he could never sing again. Even his old friends Edd and Matt refused to help him because they did not wish to be thrown out. After a while, Tom was near death until he got caught in a peculiar pirate's net.
