A queen is nearing the end of her 20s and has yet to marry and to make a proper heir to her throne. Instead, she has her lady consorts to play with. Her council will not leave her alone. She will not cave under pressure.
A mermaid is pressured to shift into a human form and 'capture' a human man with her siren song to procreate and continue on her species. She is of the bloodline of a long-gone sea goddess. She also is the only one of her kind that can feel and fall in love.
14 years in the past, the queen and the mermaid met. The latter saving the former from a drowning at sea. Over a course of one summer, they became the best of friends. They separate because of their fates.
Then happenstance has them reuniting again. Are they good friends from the past? Or something deeper and romantic?

The first time Camila heard the song, she thought it was a trick of the current. A soft, haunting melody drifted through the water, threading through the coral like a whisper. She adjusted her mask, exhaling slowly, the sound of her own breath too loud in the stillness. Then it came again-low, aching, impossibly beautiful. Her pulse quickened. She had spent years chasing this sound, following reports from fishermen and myths from island elders who spoke of a voice that called only to the lonely, the lost. A siren, they said, but not the kind who lured sailors to their doom. This one sang only for one person. And somehow, impossibly, it was singing for her. Camila followed the sound, pushing through the water, her flashlight beam cutting through the darkness. Then, she saw movement. Not a fish, not a shadow, but something else entirely. A woman. She hovered just beyond the reef, golden eyes catching the light. Her hair swayed like seaweed, her skin shimmered in shades of blue and silver. She should have been impossible. Camila's lungs burned, but she couldn't look away. The woman lifted a hand, fingers curling in invitation. And then, just as Camila's vision blurred, she felt arms around her, pulling her upward. Breaking the surface, gasping for air, she blinked against the salt spray. For a moment, she thought she had imagined it all. But the song still echoed in her ears. And when she looked back down into the deep, those golden eyes were still watching.

"No one is coming to save you. There will be no escape, there will only be you and me, here, for however long it takes for you to answer every one of my questions. If you are waiting for your King to come and save you, you are sadly mistaken, he cannot reach you here." That statement might have defeated any other prisoner, but she knew better. She had known and accepted that she would find her death here. She laughed as loudly as she could, making a show of it, "rescue me? Please don't tell me you think I'm a damsel in distress." His smile met her laugh, meeting her challenge with his own. "Distress? No. But we have just gotten started." ---- Adriell did not come here for a prince, she came for his throne. Born of the sea, bound by vengeance. Adriell, heir of the merpeople, and warrior, is captured by the humans from the land up above and transformed into the very creature she despises. Captured and transformed, she is a mermaid adrift, a warrior without her sea. Her prison becomes her battleground when she vows to assassinate the Sultan, the man who stole her life. To slaughter the sultan the way he slaughters her people. In the heart of the enemy's court, she discovers Allaric, the Sultan's son, a man haunted by his own secrets and a man who yearns for his father's downfall. Forced into a dangerous alliance, they navigate a world of shadows and lies, where enemies become allies, and hatred simmers into a forbidden desire. In this dark fantasy retelling, alliances are forged in blood, and the price of freedom is paid in secrets and sacrifice. A dark, enemies-to-lovers fantasy where the sea meets the sword. Trigger warnings inside.
