مردم سراسر جهان به سخنان او که گفت «شاعران بزرگ به کارگران، به مردم تعلق دارند، فقط آن‌ها می‌توانند آن‌ها را درک کنند» عمل کردند. آن‌ها از طريق سرودهای وی، اشعار پابلو نرودا، لورکا، برنارد بهان، و هم‌چنین مهم‌ترین شاعران یونانی مانند آنجلوس سیکلیانوس، آندریاس کالووس، گیورگوس سفریس، اودیسیاس الیتیس، یانیس ریتسوس را دریافتند و با آن‌ها آشنا شدند. به همین دلیل بود که وی در سال ۱۹۸۳ به افتخار دریافت جایزه لنین نائل شد.
