If seen from the surface of Mars, it was just another dot in the sky. And in just a few seconds, it disappeared.

That dot was a spaceship: Ambition. It was supposed to land on Mars, only the second with live, breathing, human passengers. It was supposed to. It didn't.

Whether it was a malfunction or courtesy of the universe, Ambition ignored the red planet. Flew right past it. Now its seven crew have no contact with earth, only fragments of it. 

Space is an unknown, weird thing - yet with all the anomalies and things they discover, will they ever be able to go back home?

The Box Has Twelve Sides is a collection of thirteen stories all connected as visions given to a homeless man in search of his future. When the Mars missions started to get momentum I never knew I would be a part of it. The red planet was a great platform to gain my freedom from my lost love. I was so confused about the situation that it bordered on obsession with my mentor he was my sponsor for the mission as you need to have one to vouch for your ability to get right all the aspects of the training. The human factor involved in the highly computerized setup was a glitch that set everything out of sink so the mentor system was created to help the astronaut focus on getting the job done. I did the unthinkable crime of falling in love with my mentor. So not cool,so not professional and to top it off embarrassing for me. How do I get away from this problem. Make sure I go to Mars and not have to face him again. Even if it means I never come back again.

The other ships that were supposed to arrive never did. What had started as the first of many became the only ones. Domes were built to protect the people living there, since Mars could not be conquered as the early scientists had hoped. Rather than their dreams of taming a planet, they settled for living with a place never meant for humans. Kierst is one of the descendants of those early settlers and works on the interior of one the domes. His job gives him the solitude he prefers with both work and home. He has no family and no friends, which is one of the reasons he is chosen to learn the truth about what happened to Earth and why everyone on Mars must return. He is among a small group who are entrusted with the greatest secret of his government. If his group fails, there will be no future for those living on Mars. Their secret fate lies with those who must return to Earth.
