She and her husband Willard are together in union but separated in love, this helps to create a almost robotic and scheduled way of life for the two.
When Willard's cousin Richard and his wife come to stay for a short holiday, Jude is introduced to a different side of life, she is thrown into a time of happiness and somewhat carefreeness with this visit.
She begins to fall in love all over again, she feels sensations she has never or would experience again. She grows real love for this person, they make her days brighter and give her a reason to smile.
This love goes against everything she believes in, everything she had vowed. Especially since her love is for Richard's wife, Marina.
