The world has come to an end do to a powerful virus called Nerox which brought the dead to life and whoever was bitten became a zombie.
Harry was simply out in the woods on his way to get supplies needed when he stumbles upon someone who means more to him then he could ever imagine.
Niall just wanted to die, to go down with the ship and be done with it. If he came back as a monster, he wouldn't care because it wouldn't be his conscious at the time, but maybe Harry's rescue will help him see the bright light at the end of the tunnel and maybe try to survive the apocalypse.
