پس از یک دهه مذاکرات سخت، کشورهای درگیر در «پیمان مشارکت فراپاسیفیک» (TPP) در فوریه ۲۰۱۶ معامله را امضاء کردند. این معامله تجاری از طريق تحمیل قوانین سخت‌تر پیرامون حقوق مالکیت فکری، شرکت‌های دولتی، خریدهای دولتی، و حفاظت از سرمایه‌گذاری، ۴۰ درصد تولید ناخالص داخلی جهان و ۲۵٫۵ درصد حجم تجارت جهان را تحت کنترل شرکت‌ها قرار می‌دهد.
