Zuko doesn't reveal his true identity at Lee's village and instead says: "I an the Blue Spirit". After being accepted into the village and becoming Lee's older brother replacment Zuko hides from team Avatar when they visit and hit's it off with Katara. Later Azula comes and Zuko flees with Lee who is discoverd an Earthbender to find the Gaang. When they arrive they are suspicious but don't have much choice as Zuko is really ill.

After their mother was killed, too much changed. He didn't have time for fun and games with war on their borders. To keep his remaining family safe he had to close off his heart and train relentlessly for the battle he knew they'd face eventually. The Avatar wasn't coming back.
