"If death could favour me," he thought, "I would be enslaved to it forever."
Bernard thrilled with elation, and surprisingly no pain, that he was knocked away from the road by a car, expecting hoping with every sweat in his body that death would do him a favour just this once, accept his soul and put an end to the pain of his life. What he didn't expect was to run into Clara Vane, his old high school girlfriend, the one who'd hit him.
Life, his arch-enemy, had other plans for him. While he miraculously sustained no physical harm from the accident, he had no idea that running into his old lover would be the turnover of his life forever.
After narrating his life history, Clara Vane, like every true ex would do, sympathetically offered him help. And before he knew it, Bernard found himself constricted in a situation that was better or worse than pain, dangerous than a snake zone but sweeter than misery. And there was no turning back.
