Fae have cared for the Earth since the beginning, they have watched, grown and taken. Eventually humans came, they were so different from the fae. The humans stole the land from them, so all the elder of each species put something of themselves together to create a symbol. This symbol was the Rowan tree; The one they had created together was their symbol and their door. All the fae's hurt they were no longer needed went through and locked the door, which caused it to disappear. It had been lost since fire was harnessed, but appears to a independent girl by the same name. She finder the tree and touches it, feeling it's heart. She grows close to the tree until it lets her inside, where she meets the The fallen. The fact a human was let through the door brings about many questions. Rowan must find answers to these questions before something that cannot be stopped happens.

Rowan Irvine had always been told she was childish. Her room was lined with stuffed animals and drawn-on walls. But the summer of her senior year Rowan's parents decide to move to a "sweet little town in the middle of nowhere". With a town, new home, and no friends she thought she'd have to leave her childish ways behind and grow up. Be helpful, no more made up creatures or stories or adventures. But "middle of nowhere" meant by an enormous, looming forest. And "sweet" meant the town held more secrets than it's residents. And "no more stories" meant Rowan was about to become part of a story more dark and dangerous than she could have ever imagined. Perhaps more than she ever wanted to imagine.
