Gemma Greene has spent her entire life under her mother’s strict household. She is not allowed to Riot, a popular event most teenagers partake in. Following her Rioting father’s footsteps, Gemma decides that it is better to fight the oppressive Tranquils than to sit back and let her peers do all the work. On a special night, she discovers an eye-opener that gives her the truth about violence and genocide in her society.
