Jonjo is a local hero, a former amateur sportsman now in his seventies in the rural west of Ireland. It is whimsical and nostalgic. It has excellent descriptions and embraces different genres. It traces the relationship between the hero and his Irish American cousin.

Their different values and experiences initially cause antagonism. Their adventures into the countryside take on a new meaning as they become involved in an age-old conflict. The relationship changes as do the two men.
It can be read as a simple tale of adventure or at a deeper level a story of sacrifice and redemption.

The story is full of good-natured humour. It is accessible while retaining a literary feel. It is escapist and has a feel-good quality.
