If ever put into a situation where you were forced to kill to live, would you do it? Would you still do it if it was someone close to you? Mara believed she thought she knew the answer, but when she's actually placed into the situation, she's forced to make the critical choice. Obviously, she has to protect herself. That she has no doubt in her mind until that doubt starts to grow. Surely she's justified in her actions, right?
