مفهوم جامعه مدنی در آثار کلاسیک مارکسیستی، بویژه در نوشته‌های مارکس، انگلس و گرامشی به دقت تشریح شده است. مارکس و انگلس در کتاب ایدئولوژی آلمانی «جامعه مدنی» را بمثایه قلمروئی که تعیین کننده دولت و مجموعه روبنای سیاسی جامعه است تعریف کرده‌اند: «... سازمان اجتماعی که مستقیماً از درون تولید و تجارت برآمده و در همه اعصار زیربنای دولت و مابقی روبنای ایدئولوژیک را تشکیل می‌دهد، همیشه با همین نام مشخص شده است.»
