It is only the middle of September, but it is already deep autumn in Woodline, Vermont, and the nights are cold, almost freezing. There are a few space heaters scattered around the old cabin, but Serena and Myles spend most of their time here, in front of the fireplace, with their two pugs. This is the first time they've fled home to Vermont as refugees from smokey, riotous Los Angeles, exhausted and unmoored, the length of their stay undetermined, but it will not be the last. Serena has a premonition about this.

This weekend, they have guests. The Hollingers. A couple and their toddler, childhood friends of Myles'.
