Writer Ellen Harries is unhappily married to driven business man Rupert Harries, who abuses her both verbally and physically. Ellen begins a new story after a long drought of writer's block and becomes emotionally invested in her fictional character, Harvey Leland, because of her lack of marital stability. As a result, Rupert believes Ellen to be having an affair because he can not actually see Harvey and doesn't believe her when she tries to explain the situation.
Amidst her crumbling marriage, Ellen finds herself falling in love with Harvey, who she does not realize nor want to admit, is not real, and is unwilling to end the romance until her husband threatens divorce and Harvey comes to the realization that he is just a fictional character. Ellen must then decide whether she will stay with Harvey or break off her relationship with Rupert.
Ellen has to face the consequences when after opting to stay with Harvey, Rupert, in a furious rage, secretly kills Harvey off by altering Ellen's novel. Ellen does not realize what has happened until later when she can no longer find Harvey. She tries desperately to resurrect him, but her attempts are in vain. Once saved, the fate of the story is final. Seeking revenge out of anger and mourning for Harvey, Ellen writes Rupert into the story, traping him within the pages of her book while she tries to regroup and put her life back together
