Coraline and Nikolai Mikaelsons are the children of the original hybrid. This was revealed to them when the 500 year old doppelganger popped into Mystic Falls.

Niklaus Mikaelson had always known about his twins. Their mother had sent postcards to him every year. But he knew staying away from his fifteen year old angels would be safer for them.

Now, with their mother dead, and them developing powers no one knew they had, his children need them. And he has sworn to himself that he will protect them with his life. The same, of course, can't be said for their doppelganger best friend.
