Nightmare and Dream are the protectors of the sun and moon tree. Nightmare had enough of the constant abuse that the villagers had gave him. So he ate the dark apples. But before that he met Cross in one of his dreams. Cross wished to meet Nightmare. He was fond of Nightmares company. But if he once found Nightmare. It didn't look pretty.
