Though not wealthy, Caroline Jenkins and her family have always known warmth and comfort, never wanting. However, with the illness and death of her mother and her father taken away to debtors' prison, Caroline must now care for younger brother and two younger sisters, lest they be taken away to the workhouse and separated. Caroline has no choice but to do whatever it takes to care for them, even if it means forsaking her own wellbeing. Her stubborn sense of pride and family honor keeps Caroline from admitting the truth of her father to the town or accepting any form of assistance. This is, however, until she finds herself falling ill and weak and in need of assistance. And that assistance comes in the form of Gregory, Earl Woodstone, and his family.
